Description

The Banff International Research Station will host the "Triangulated categories and applications" workshop from June 12th to June 17th, 2011.

"Triangulated categories" offer a powerful set of techniques for mathematicians of very different horizons. Born independently in algebraic geometry and topology, triangulated categories were later "re-discovered" by people interested in the representation of finite groups, and by many mathematicians of more recent specialization, like in the theory of motives, in non-commutative topology or even in string theory, in physics.

This highly interdisciplinary workshop offers the opportunity to specialists of different background, sharing an interest in triangulated categories, to meet and exchange ideas and techniques. It also offers the opportunity to train younger mathematicians and to open them to the broad potential and large spectrum of applications of triangulated categories.

The Banff International Research Station for Mathematical Innovation and Discovery (BIRS) is a collaborative Canada-US-Mexico venture that provides an environment for creative interaction as well as the exchange of ideas, knowledge, and methods within the Mathematical Sciences, with related disciplines and with industry. The research station is located at The Banff Centre in Alberta and is supported by Canada's Natural Science and Engineering Research Council (NSERC), the U.S. National Science Foundation (NSF), Alberta's Advanced Education and Technology, and Mexico's Consejo Nacional de Ciencia y Tecnología (CONACYT).
