Press Release:
WIN2: Women in Numbers 2
The Banff International Research Station will host the "WIN2: Women in Numbers 2" workshop from November 6th to November 11th, 2011.
Number Theory is the study of questions related to the natural numbers: 1, 2, 3, ... It is a fundamental area of mathematics. Once a purely abstract area, it has grown considerably and spread to reach many other fields of mathematics and information technology. In social terms, this growth has been uneven: while number theory has attracted both male and female mathematicians, the representation and visibility of women in the area is poor. This workshop will gather female number theorists at various stages of their careers and provide a nurturing environment for research projects with the goals of facilitating collaborations, mentorship, networking, and empowering women in number theory in general.
The Banff International Research Station for Mathematical Innovation and Discovery (BIRS) is a collaborative Canada-US-Mexico venture that provides an environment for creative interaction as well as the exchange of ideas, knowledge, and methods within the Mathematical Sciences, with related disciplines and with industry. The research station is located at The Banff Centre in Alberta and is supported by Canada's Natural Science and Engineering Research Council (NSERC), the U.S. National Science Foundation (NSF), Alberta's Advanced Education and Technology, and Mexico's Consejo Nacional de Ciencia y Tecnología (CONACYT).
