Description
The Banff International Research Station will host the "Recent Progress in Dynamical Systems and Related Topics" workshop from August 10th to August 15th, 2014.
BIRS hosts an international workshop on recent progress in dynamical systems and related topics with participants from Europe, Asia and the Americas. The discipline of dynamical systems has many applications, some of which are known by the popular name of chaos theory, and it studies systems that evolve in time, often in ways so complicated that statistical methods are needed for a useful description. The subjects of this workshop are related to particle motion in curved spaces (geodesic flows) and enclosures (billiards), both of which are related to celestial mechanics, to evolutions of spaces themselves (Teichmüller flow), to evolutions with respect to multidimensional time, and to the question of whether essentially all such systems can be described in terms of a very few main categories (the Palis Conjecture).
The Banff International Research Station for Mathematical Innovation and Discovery (BIRS) is a collaborative Canada-US-Mexico venture that provides an environment for creative interaction as well as the exchange of ideas, knowledge, and methods within the Mathematical Sciences, with related disciplines and with industry. The research station is located at The Banff Centre in Alberta and is supported by Canada's Natural Science and Engineering Research Council (NSERC), the U.S. National Science Foundation (NSF), Alberta's Advanced Education and Technology, and Mexico's Consejo Nacional de Ciencia y Tecnología (CONACYT).
