Note: the Lecture rooms are available after 16:00.

Since everyone's travel times differ we'll keep things informal Friday evening. Once you get settled in, take some time to explore the town of Banff and get something to eat. Banff on a Friday in July will be busy -- smaller groups will have more success finding a table. Starting at 7:30 we'll gather in the Corbett Hall lounge so that everyone can introduce their self and their interests. Beverages and a small assortment of snacks are available in the lounge on a cash honour system.

A buffet breakfast is served daily between 7:00am and 9:00am in the Vistas Dining Room, the top floor of the Sally Borden Building. Note that BIRS does not pay for meals for 2-day workshops.

(However, thanks to funding from PIMS, the workshop organizers will be able to arrange for meals to be covered.)

Meet in foyer of TCPL to participate in the BIRS group photo. The photograph will be taken outdoors, so dress appropriately for the weather. Please don't be late, or you might not be in the official group photo!

PLOM is open-source online grading software written in Python. It has been used to successfully grade roughly 10,000 exams at UBC. PLOM is designed to easily handle multiple versions of an exam, and allow for higher quality feedback through predefined grading rubrics.

Stack is a question type plugin for Moodle powered by the open source Maxima computer algebra system. It allows for computer graded quiz or homework questions with some adaptive feedback.

Many short presentations (5-10 minutes) by workshop participants who want to share their OER work.

(Led by Claude Laflamme) What is the right model for supporting and maintaining open source educational materials in mathematics? Could a non-profit corporation lead the way? Authors are willing to give content away for free. But high quality materials need editors. And servers to run interactive content. And money to support future development. With work spread across many institutions, do we need an entity outside of academia to help promote and coordinate OER?

2-day workshop participants are welcome to use BIRS facilities (Corbett Hall Lounge, TCPL, Reading Room) until 15:00 on Sunday, although participants are still required to checkout of the guest rooms by 12 noon. There is no coffee break service on Sunday afternoon, but self-serve coffee and tea are always available in the 2nd floor lounge, Corbett Hall.
